Spotlight on Newcastle

Looking for your forever home in Newcastle? You’ll never be short of new friends as the locals are considered some of the friendliest in the UK. Let’s take a tour around the city to see what’s on offer.

Culture Vulture

Newcastle Culture

Driving along the A1, you can’t miss the iconic 20 metre tall Angel of the North sculpture – seen by over 30 million people each year. In the city centre, you’ll find the Norman Castle, with its ancient passageways, chambers. And did you know that there are over two miles of tunnels underneath Newcastle’s streets? The Victorian Tunnel, built between 1839 and 1842 to transport coal, is open for exploration.

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, overlooking the magnificent Quayside, is perfect for anyone looking for dynamic and diverse art and exhibitions. Or you can explore the secrets of nature in the National History Museum, one of the best in the UK. And for train enthusiasts, you can re-live the glorious days of the steam railway at the Stephenson Railway Museum – and even take a ride on a 1950s passenger train pulled by steam or heritage diesel locomotives.

Picturesque Walks

Newcastle Walks

There are many picturesque walks in the region. Jesmond Dene is a firm local’s favourite, with its narrow wooded valley offering a peaceful haven from the hub of city life. Leazes Park is the city’s oldest public park and has a fishing lake and boathouse, a restored bandstand and large playground for the grandchildren to enjoy. At Exhibition Park, north of the city centre, you will find a weekly Park run for all abilities. It also has a boating lake and bandstand and the Place of the Arts, built for the 1929 Exhibition of Science, Industry and Arts, which gives the park its name.

Eating Out

Tasty treats are in abundance in the area. From Indian delights at Simla, seasonal produce at Branches Jesmond, to a staple Northern - dish pie, peas, and mash at The Red House, where you can wash it down with a pint of the brown stuff, Newcastle Pale ale. Or how about dining al fresco at Quayside Market on Sundays at the water’s edge? And if you’re hankering for some sweet treats and maybe something sparkling, you can pop into Malmaison or the Great British Cupcakery for afternoon tea.

Shop ‘til you drop

Manchester United

Shopping in Newcastle is fantastic, with everything from designer stores to high street brands. Eldon Square is one of the UK’s largest shopping malls, where you can find the original Fenwick department store. Or for something quirky, try the Biscuit Factory for its independent art, craft, and design gallery. And bargain hunters can find great prices at the Barbour Factory Outlet store.

With its blend of culture, architecture, and friendly locals, Newcastle could be your canny (very good) perfect home. We have many retirement properties waiting to be seen. Visit www.Retirementhomesearch.co.uk for more information.
