Spotlight on Cardiff

Cardiff is such a special blend of old and new. So, if you’re looking to return to a place which holds special memories for you, or simply choosing a new adventure as a first timer, Cardiff could be just the spot for your forever home.

Arts and Culture

Cardiff Arts

Originating from Roman times, Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’s leading heritage attractions – and if you decide to live in Cardiff, you will be entitled to your very own Castle Key giving you free admission for three years! Another local treasure is St Fagans National Museum of History, one of Europe’s leading open air museums. And for art lovers, the National Museum (no entrance fee!) houses the largest collection of impressionist art outside Paris and also works spanning over 500 years of art history.

Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay

In the 1900s, this area was the main way of transporting coal from South Wales to the rest of the world. Now, the Bay houses The Senedd, home to the National Assembly for Wales, where you can take a tour of the sustainable building, designed by renowned architect Richard Rogers. You’ll also find The Millennium Centre, a fascinating modern arts and events venue, constructed entirely from Welsh materials, in Cardiff Bay. The Centre is also home to the National Dance Company of Wales, Hijinx Theatre, and the BBC National Orchestra. And for an entertainment alternative, you can head over to Chapter in Canton for independent film, art, theatre, and creativity.

Walking

Cardiff is pretty compact, and you can easily walk between the city centre, Pontcanna, Canton, Cathays, and Roath neighbourhoods. And its parks and green spaces make it one of the greenest cities in the UK. The ‘Taff Trail’ provides many circular walks, including Bute Park, Hamadryad Park, Cardiff Bay Wetland Reserve, Hailey Park, and Forest Farm Country Park.

Cardiff Food

Cardiff Food

The sheer diversity of cuisines on offer will satisfy many appetites. From the steakhouse Pasture to the Indian Purple Poppadom, which holds the title of the best restaurant in Wales in the 2021 British Curry Awards! Middle Eastern restaurant Saray, to burger hot spot The Grazing Shed. And if you’re hankering after some good old traditional fayre, the Heathcock is a popular choice for its real ale and seasonal pub grub, or how about a tasty afternoon tea at the Barker Tea House. Cocktails galore can be found in Mill Lane in the city centre too.

Shopping

You’ll never be stuck trying to find your favourite shopping haunt. Cardiff has large shopping centres, all of your high street favourites, individual stores, and a thriving indoor market. The Victorian and Edwardian arcades are a real treat, full of independent boutiques and cafes, and worth a visit as architectural gems.
